"Heroines"
Curated by Guillermo Solana
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain
March 8th-June 5th, 2011
Exhibition Catalog by Guillermo Solana
"Maternity and homecare have been the functions that society has attributed to women for years. In this exhibition, women change place and are presented as they perform roles that were not originally conceived for them. The idea behind 'Heroines' is to show, through a selection of 120 paintings and photographs, images of women in active roles at work, in sports or at war. 'Most of them are made by men, and they often reflect a chauvinistic, male-dominated worldview. But in each section of the exhibition we have also included other contemporary artists, especially women, to offset that patriarchal tradition,' says Guillermo Solana. The exhibition journeys through artists depicting women as an active subject and main character, from the Renaissance through today. Artists featured include Artemisia Gentileschi, Angelica Kauffmann, Caravaggio, Rubens, Goya, Delacroix, Hopper, Frida Kahlo, as well as contemporary artists such as Kiki Smith and Marina Abramovic."
